In 2024 the City of Stonnington – with support of the GCRC – submitted a grant submission to Victorian Government’s Green Links program to rehabilitate the Glen Iris wetlands and were successful.
The Council received $196,863 to support the delivery of the Glen Iris Wetlands and Gardiners Creek (KooyongKoot) Biodiversity Project.
The project will primarily focus on contaminated sediment removal and vegetation improvement works.
The vegetation component will include the removal of weeds within the wetlands and along the KooyongKoot creek corridor, and the planting of approximately 20,000 new terrestrial, aquatic and ephemeral native plants across the area.
The works will improve the quality of the water passing through the wetlands and into the KooyongKoot creek and support local wildlife through improved habitat.
The project kicked off in December 2024 and will be completed by the end of 2025.
The GCRC is very excited to see projects like this within the catchment getting support from the state Government, as they support a key component of it’s Vision – to protect and enhance the creek through improvements to water quality and habitat.
If you have any questions about the project reach out to the City of Stonnington, or head down to the wetlands and see the works being undertaken for yourself.
