Gardiners Creek Reserve planting/weeding event

The team uncovered a few hoppy critters including the Striped Marsh Frog (see photographs below) and we made sure that there were some plants planted just for them, to improve their native habitat.

Brady Hamilton from Deakin University gave an interesting talk on his research focussing on monitoring pesticides in Gardiners Creek (KooyongKoot) and ecologist David De Angelis talked about local reptiles and amphibians, and the importance of habitat to improve their resilience.

The KKA had put on an amazing BBQ which was the perfect way to end a really productive and fun day with community on the creek.

Thanks to all the community groups who took part, including Urban Guerrillas, Rotary (various), Deakin Enviro Club, Bennettswood Bowling Club, Friends of Gardiners Creek Reserve and many others. And thanks to Deakin University for funding the BBQ, the Rotary for doing a great job cooking the food, Whitehorse City Council for it’s general support with the project, and of course the Victorian Government for funding this project through the Greenlinks program.

A further 15,000 plants need to be planted over the next two years, so stay tuned for the next planting event.
