Gardiner Creek (KooyongKoot) catchment-scale litter monitoring pilot with CSIRO
The GCRC are working collaboratively with the CSIRO on a pilot litter monitor project using cameras on waterways to monitor litter flowing down through the catchment.
This collaboration are working with CSIRO on a pilot project to monitor litter flowing down through waterways within the catchment.
This pilot project will commence late October/early November and will focus on monitoring an array of sites across key waterways within the catchment including the Gardiners Creek (KooyongKoot), Scotchmans Creek, Back Creek and Damper Creek.
The project leverages some trial technology from CSIRO which is using cameras and a bespoke computer software to count and categorise large types of litter such as plastic bottles, aluminium cans, and coffee cups.
The objective of this pilot project is to get a better understanding of the volume and type of litter flowing down through the catchment, particularly after rain events, to understand the scale of the litter problem within the Gardiners Creek (KooyongKoot) catchment.
Learnings from this project will help to guide investment into waste education, waste infrastructure and to build further justification for advocacy projects targeting waste management and production/manufacturing related policies.
